Verkh-Ussugli ( Russian Верх-Усугли ) is a village (selo) in the Transbaikalia region in Russia with 2624 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The place is about 140 km as the crow flies northeast of the regional capital Chita on the southern flank of the 1300  m high Tscherski Mountains . It is located on the Ussugli river, which gives it its name, which flows into the right Nertscha tributary Uldurga about 12 km southeast .

Verkh-Ussugli is the administrative center of the Rajons Tungokotschenski and seat and only town in the rural community of Verkh-Ussuglinskoje selskoje posselenije.

history

The village goes back to the discovery of fluorspar deposits by a resident of the village of Ussugli, a few kilometers to the southeast, in 1936. In the years 1959–1966 a mine and an enrichment factory were built at the deposit, and the settlement created there was given the name Werch-Ussugli ("Ober-Ussugli") due to its location above the old village . In 1976 the administrative seat of the Rajon, which had been located in the eponymous village of Tungokotschen , 100 km north of the Karenga and difficult to reach , was relocated to Werch-Ussugli since its foundation in 1938 .

Werch-Ussugli is the end point of the regional road 76K-182 from Vershino-Darassunski , an extension of the 76K-022, which branches off north of the town of Shilka from the trunk road R297 Amur , which runs about 100 km from Werch-Ussugli . A few kilometers before Werch-Ussugli, the mostly unpaved local road 76N-120 branches off from the 76K-182, which initially leads in a north-easterly direction to the village of Kyker on the right bank of the Nertscha, then crosses the Tscherski Mountains over the Kykerski Pass, which is a good 1000  m high and after 136 km you reach the former Rajon center Tungokotschen.
