history

The place was founded in 1968 in connection with the beginning of the development of a uranium deposit of Strelzovskoye , which was discovered in 1963 , and was granted town charter on July 16, 1969. The name is derived from the Russian krasny came for red stone, rock , whereby red could be related to the political meaning of the color in addition to the real reddish coloration of the rocks in the area .

The city became known abroad through the existing prison camp, in which Mikhail Khodorkovsky was imprisoned from October 2005 to December 2006.

Economy and Infrastructure

The largest uranium mine in Russia, operated by the Priargunsk Mining and Chemical Production Association, is located near Krasnokamensk . The 3000 tons of uranium mined here annually represent over 90% of the total production of Russia and almost 10% of the world production. In addition to uranium, molybdenum and manganese are mined in the area in open-cast and underground mines , as well as lignite for local energy generation in a thermal power plant located here . A chemical factory produces sulfuric acid and lubricants on the basis of the ores extracted here ; there are also companies in the construction and food industries.

Due to the high environmental pollution, including radioactivity , the residents of the districts closer to the mining and waste dump areas , such as the Oktjabrski settlement , have been relocated to the area of the city center a good ten kilometers to the west in recent years.

Since 1972, a 15-kilometer branch line has run from the Uruljungui station of the Kharanor - Priargunsk railway line to Krasnokamensk. The line to Priargunsk, which was built between 1939 and 1955 as a narrow-gauge railway with a gauge of 750 mm, was also converted to Russian broad-gauge for the purpose of connecting the mining area around Krasnokamensk .

Krasnokamensk has a regional airport.
