Balei ( Russian Балей ) is a city in the Transbaikalia region ( Russia ) with 12,533 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located on the southern flank of the Borschtschowotschnygebirge, which is almost 1200 meters high in Transbaikalia , about 350 km east of the regional capital Chita , on the Unda River , a right tributary of the Onon .
The city of Balei is administratively directly subordinate to the region and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .
Balei is connected by a road to the Priiskowaja station (near Nerchinsk ), 55 km to the north, of the Trans-Siberian Railway and has a small airport.
history
In the 19th century, the Novotroitskoje gold panning settlement was built on the site of today's town , and gold production began in 1858. In 1938, the town received its town charter under its current name. In 1947 the region's most important gold deposit , Cupievskoye , was discovered, and prisoners of the subsequently established Baleilag in the Gulag system were used to exploit it .

economy
Balei is the center of gold mining with multiple shafts , an open pit and an enrichment factory. The deposit has been exploited since 2004 with the participation of the Canadian Barrick Gold .
