Priargunsk ( Russian Приаргу́нск ) is an urban-type settlement in the Transbaikalia region in Russia with 7388 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is about 430 km as the crow flies southeast of the regional capital Tschita . It is located on the Uruljungui river, not far from its confluence with the Amur source river, Argun , which marks the state border with the People's Republic of China .

Priargunsk administrative center is the Rajons Priargunski and seat and only town of the municipality posselenije Priargunskoje gorodskoje.

history

The place was founded in 1953 under the name Zuruchaitui , based on the nearest villages Starozuruchaitui ("Old Zuruchaitui"), 25 km southeast, upstream on the Argun, and Nowozuruchaitui ("New Zuruchaitui"), a good 3 km northeast, downstream on the Located in Argun. Since 1958 the place has had the status of an urban-type settlement.

In 1962 Priargunsk got its current name, derived from the Russian pri Arguni for am Argun. At the same time, the Byrkinski rajon, which had existed since 1926, was renamed and its administration was relocated from the village of Byrka, 50 km northwest, to Priargunsk.

Priargunsk is the end point of a 207 km long railway line that branches off at the Kharanor station from the Karymskaya  - Sabaikalsk line (former Chinese Eastern Railway ). The line to Priargunsk was initially built as a narrow-gauge railway ( gauge 750 mm) in the early 1950s and then converted to Russian broad gauge in the early 1970s .

The settlement is on the road that follows the left bank of the Argun from Sabaikalsk down to Nerchinsky Zavod . To the northwest there is a cross-connection to the regional road R430, which also runs from Borsja to Nerchinsky Zavod.
