Chilok ( Russian Хилок ) is a city in the Transbaikalia region ( Russia ) with 11,539 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The city lies between the Zagan-Churtei ridge and the Jablonowy Mountains , about 260 km west of the regional capital Chita , on the Chilok River , a right tributary of the Selenga .

The city of Chilok is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

Chilok is a station of the Trans-Siberian Railway (km 5934 from Moscow ). The M55 Irkutsk- Chita road runs through the city .

history

Chilok was created in 1895 during the construction of the Transbaikal section of the Trans-Siberian Railway and developed as a station settlement after its opening in 1900. The place was named after the river (of Evenki kilka for grinding stone ). In 1951 Chilok received city rights.

A Paleolithic settlement was excavated near the village of Gyrschelun (15 km east, railway station) .

In Chilok, as the center of an agricultural area, there are companies in the food industry, as well as woodworking and railway workshops.
