Tarbagatai ( Russian Тарбагата́й ) is an urban-type settlement in the Transbaikalia region in Russia with 2227 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The place is about 320 km as the crow flies west-southwest of the regional capital Chita on the right bank of the Chilok, which flows there north of the Jablonowy Mountains .
Tarbagatai belongs to the Petrovsk-Sabaikalski Raion and is located almost 30 km east of its administrative center Petrowsk-Sabaikalski . It is the seat and only locality of the municipality Tarbagataiskoje gorodskoje posselenije.
history
The settlement emerged after the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway in connection with the discovery of a nearby coal deposit between 1905 and 1907. Since 1946 Tarbagatai has had the status of an urban-type settlement.

Tarbagatai is located on the Trans-Siberian Railway electrified on this section in 1974 (route km 5818 from Moscow ). To the north the settlement is bypassed by the trunk road R258 Baikal (formerly M55), which connects Irkutsk to Chita via Ulan-Ude and is part of the transcontinental road link.
