geography

The city is located in the steppes of southern Transbaikalia , a good 40 km from the border with Mongolia and 70 km from the border with China , about 400 km southeast of the regional capital Chita , on the Borsja River , a right tributary of the Onon .

The city of Borsja is administratively directly subordinate to the region and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

history

A settlement in the area of today's city was established in the 18th century. After the opening of the railway line in 1899, the larger settlement around the station developed into a traffic and trading center of the southeastern Transbaikalia. In 1900 the settlement was officially named Suworowski , after the Russian general Alexander Suworow . However, this name did not become common, and the place continued to be called, like the train station, after the river Borsja of the same name. In 1950 the place received city rights under this name.
