Location of Choibalsan in Mongolia

Choibalsan ( Mongolian Чойбалсан ) is the capital of Dornod-Aimag in Mongolia and the fourth largest city in the country. Until 1941 the city was named Bajan Tumen ( Баян Тумэн ), then it was renamed in honor of the communist leader Chorloogiin Tschoibalsan . It is located on the Cherlen River at an altitude of 747 m above sea level.

history

The site was a resting place for caravans for centuries. In the nineteenth century it developed into a city, and in the twentieth century it became the economic center of eastern Mongolia. When the Russian workers withdrew after the fall of the Wall in Mongolia , large parts of the economy collapsed. Since then the city has had one of the highest unemployment figures in the country.

population

Choibalsan is mainly inhabited by Chalcha Mongols, as well as smaller parts of Buryats , Barga and Uzemchin . There is also a minority of Inner Mongolia immigrants in China .

traffic

The Tschoibalsan airport (COQ / zmcd) has a fixed runway and is of regular flights to and from Ulaanbaatar operated. Choibalsan is connected to the Russian railway network via Solovyovsk via a branch line that was opened in 1939 and branches off from Borsja .
