Yuri Alexandrovich Senkevich

Yuri Alexandrowitsch Senkewitsch ( Russian Ю́рий Алекса́ндрович Сенке́вич ; born March 4, 1937 in Bayan Tumen , Mongolian People's Republic ; † September 25, 2003 in Moscow ) was a Soviet - Russian doctor, television presenter and author.

Life

Yuri Senkewitsch was born in the Mongolian city of Bayan Tumen (now Choibalsan) as the son of a Soviet doctor working in the Mongolian People's Republic and a nurse.

In 1960 he graduated from the SM Kirov Military Medical Academy in Leningrad . After a brief activity as a troop doctor in the Soviet Army , he came to the Moscow Institute for Aviation and Space Medicine of the Ministry of Defense in 1962, and in 1963 to the Institute for Medical-Biological Problems of the Ministry of Health of the Soviet Union. There he rose to head the education and training center for medical and biological preparation of cosmonauts and took part in cosmonaut training himself . From 1966 to 1967 Senkewitsch took part in the 12th Soviet Antarctic expedition to the Vostok station . The investigations carried out during the expedition formed the basis for his doctoral thesis. In 1969, Yuri Senkevich was selected as a Soviet participant in Thor Heyerdahl's Ra expedition. He also took part in the follow-up expedition Ra II in 1970 and in the Tigris voyage on the Indian Ocean from 1977 to 1978. In 1979 Senkevich worked on the medical preparations for a Soviet North Pole expedition , and from 1980 to 1982 on the preparation and implementation of the first Soviet Mount Everest expedition.

Until 1982 Senkevich remained head of the department for scientific-medical and technical information at the Institute for Medical-Biological Problems .

From 1973 he was the presenter of the program Klub der Kinoreisen ( Klub kinoputeschestwij ) of the Central Soviet Television; later Club of Travelers ( Klub puteschestvennikow ) at the ORT canal . He hosted the show for over 30 years and was extremely popular in this position; after Senkevich's death the club was dismissed.

Yuri Senkevich died as a result of a heart attack . He is buried in Moscow's Novodevichy Cemetery. It is planned to open a small museum in Senkevich's former office in Moscow with personal items and an exhibition dedicated to the exploration of the Arctic , Antarctic and oceans.

On June 24, 2002, the asteroid (7980) Senkevich was named after him.

In 2007, the Russian airline Aeroflot named one of its new Airbus A319 aircraft after Yuri Senkevich.

During his lifetime he received several high awards from the Soviet Union, such as the State Prize of the USSR for his research in Antarctica and the Order of Friendship of Peoples , as well as Russia, including the Order for Merit to the Fatherland .

Senkewitsch published more than 60 scientific papers on the physiology and psychology of humans under extreme conditions, for example in space, as well as the popular scientific works and travel books:
