Mariposa Monarca is a biosphere reserve on the border between the Mexican states of Michoacán and México , about 100 kilometers northwest of Mexico City .

It is one of the winter quarters of the monarch butterfly , an American butterfly species .
Up to a billion of them may winter in the biosphere reserve area between November and March.
The monarch butterfly migrates up to 4000 kilometers between the north of the USA and Mexico every year.
The 56,259 hectare area is located in a wooded mountain region at an altitude of around 3000 meters.
