Morelia is the capital of the Mexican state of Michoacán and the Municipio Morelia . It has 597,511 inhabitants (as of 2010).
Due to the well-preserved buildings from the colonial times, it is one of the most visited cities in Mexico. Since 1991 , the old town is a UNESCO - World Heritage Site .

history
The city was founded on May 18, 1541 by Juan de Alvarado, Juan de Villaseñor and Luis de León Romano under the mandate of the first viceroy of New Spain Antonio de Mendoza and called Ciudad de Mechuacán . In 1545 it was renamed Valladolid . In 1828 the city was renamed Morelia again, this time in honor of the hero of the Mexican War of Independence from Spain, José María Morelos .
Infrastructure
The city has an international airport ( IATA code : MLM). In the city there is the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, founded in 1551, as well as other universities and research institutions: Instituto Tecnológico de Morelia, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Universidad Tecnológica de Morelia, Instituto Tecnológico del Valle de Morelia.
