Yagul is a pre-Columbian city ​​complex (now an archaeological excavation site) near Tlacolula de Matamoros in Oaxaca , Mexico . The first traces of settlement can already be found around the 3rd millennium BC. BC. The city was from the 5th Century. BC by the Zapotecs , later built, inhabited and expanded by the Mixtecs . A fortress was built on the immediately adjacent mountain peak. Several rich burial sites have been uncovered near the excavation. Several pyramids were built around 900, some palaces only around 1300 to 1400.

The prehistoric caves and structures of Yagul and Mitla in the Oaxaca Valley have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2010 .
