Thomas Schönauer (* 1953 in Düsseldorf ) is a German visual artist . His works are represented in public spaces as well as in private and institutional collections.

Life

Between 1974 and 1978, Schönauer completed a degree in German , Romance languages and philosophy at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . From 1975 to 1978 he was also an assistant in the sculpture studio of Friederich Werthmann in Düsseldorf. He intensified his art studies through a stay at the Manitoba Institute of Design, Winnipeg , Canada and close contact with the Düsseldorf Art Academy and its personalities. He has had his own studio in Düsseldorf since 1978 and lives with his family in Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth . In 2011 Schönauer was appointed to the design advisory board of the University Hospital Düsseldorf. In 2012 he was appointed an extraordinary member of the BDA (Association of German Architects).

Artistic work

sculpture

Lacquered steel sculptures are typical of Schönauer's work . The fact that metal serves as the substrate for a layer of paint only becomes apparent on closer inspection. A wide variety of works form the basis of his overall works, including experiments with copper assemblage , spatial tensioning with ropes and elastic bands, a series of communication, tree trunks in steel rod sculptures, metaphysical sculptures as well as elementary geometry and metaphysics . Schönauer's central theme is the interplay of matter and vacuum, body and mind.

Since 1988 the artist has expanded his work with sound sculptures I, geometry and astronomy transformed into sound . In 1990, multimedia environments on the subject of ecology followed , in 1993 sound sculptures II, amorphous metal bodies and vowel intonations . In 1995 the material and immaterial space was created as a multi-part, sculptural ensemble. In 2001 Schönauer formulated the topic “Dynamics - Equilibrium ” as colored steel works in the context of vibration, mass and balance. In 2004 the artist created the series “space paintings on steel” as a spatial body made of lacquer and stainless steel sheet. He took part in numerous projects and competitions at home and abroad, e.g. B. in Europe, North and South America, India, Africa and the Middle East.

painting

In addition to sculpture, Thomas Schönauer is also involved in painting. This work area arose from the idea of moving from the two-dimensional ink or watercolor drawing to a three-dimensional object -like nature of painting. The artist uses steel as a basis, onto which he applies non-planar material in the form of varnish. He achieves the spatiality both through the layering of the material and through the content of the paintings. The color itself becomes the form.

CT-Paintings and CT-Universe

In the CT-Paintings (computer tomography paintings) series, Schönauer turns to an expressive polychromy , which is achieved using epoxy resin with quartz sand and liquid pigments . A special color intensity is given by a finish made of acrylic varnish . The presentation of entire color landscapes is expressed.
