Gourin ( Breton : as Gourin ) is a French municipality with 3803 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany . It belongs to the community association Roi Morvan Communauté .

Origin of the place name

The name of the place Gourin comes from the Breton Govrein . A large proportion of the local population still speaks the Breton language .

geography

Gourin is located in the northwest of the department of Morbihan on the border of the departments of Côtes-d'Armor and Finistère and belongs to the Pays du Roi Morvan.

Neighboring municipalities are the municipalities of Spézet and Saint-Hernin in the north in the Finistère department, Tréogan in the northeast in the Côtes-d'Armor , Langonnet in the east, Le Saint in the southeast, Guiscriff in the south and Roudouallec in the west.

The place itself is at the intersection of some regional roads. The most important road links are the D769 from Saint-Pol-de-Léon to Lorient , which runs east of the village through the municipality, and the N164 in the north. The place had both a train station of the Chemins de fer du Morbihan and one of the Réseau Breton .

The most important bodies of water are the Inam river (also known as Stêr Laër in the upper reaches) and the Gozvoalet , Kerendily , Kergonan , Menguionnet , Moulin , Moulin Quilliou , Moulin du Pré and Rastal Groui brooks in the municipality of Saint-Nicolas . Some of these waters partially form the municipal boundary. There are also numerous ponds in the municipal area. Only small areas of the municipal area are forested.

history

The municipality historically belongs to the Breton region of Kernev (French. Cornouaille ) and within this region to the area Bro Chtou (French. Chtou) and shares its history. Gourin has been the capital of its own canton since 1793.

Culture

Unusual for the size of the city is the festival ty gay à Gourin , a gay pride that has been taking place since 2008 at the beginning of August with around 5,000 visitors. It is organized by a local long-time club owner and supported by the local economy and the community.
