Guéhenno ( Breton : Gwezhennoù :; Gallo Gèceno is a) French community with 796 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany .

geography

Guéhenno is located in the southern part of Brittany in the center of the Morbihan department and belongs to the Pays de Pontivy.

Neighboring municipalities are Guégon in the north and north-east, Cruguel and Billio in the south-east, Saint-Jean-Brévelay in the south-west, Bignan in the west and Buléon in the north-west.

The D778 runs through the village from Saint-Jean-Brévelay to Josselin . The N24 from Lorient to Rennes is important for national traffic . The closest connection to this is 5 km north in La Pointe.

The two streams Sedon and Lay as well as several ponds and ponds are the main bodies of water in the community. The municipal boundary partially runs along the streams.

history

Guéhenno is mentioned for the first time in 1260 under the name Monster-Guézenou , the name Mouster-Guezenou is used until the 15th century . It goes back to a monastery or, more likely, a rural chapel dedicated to Saint Guéthénoc .

Historically, the municipality belongs to the Breton region of Bro-Gwened (French: Vannetais) and within this region to the area of ​​Reter Bro Gwened (French: Vannetais oriental) and shares its history.

The discovery of numerous polished stone axes and some Tetricus coins as well as the presence of small burial mounds in the Grano-Moor testify to a Celtic and then Gallo-Roman settlement , and there is also a miliarium on the municipal area.

Every year, on Michaelmas , found on Mount Guéhenno held a very important trade fair, in which the Countess of Porhoët a demurrage demanded.

The parish was the scene of some heroic deeds by the Chouannerie . Georges Cadoudal defeated a force of Republicans in Guéhenno in 1789 , and in 1791 Rector Vincent Denouel refused to take the oath on the civil constitution of the clergy . He was deported to Guyana , where he died on December 22, 1798.

From 1801 until its dissolution on September 10, 1926, it belonged to the Arrondissement of Ploërmel. From 1793 until its dissolution in 1801, Guéhenno belonged to the canton of Plumelec. Since then, the municipality has been assigned to the canton of Saint-Jean-Brévelay.

Guéhenno owned the Chapelle Notre-Dame-ès-Brières , now part of Guégon , and the Timbrieux Castle , which is now in the Cruguel area.
