Pontivy ( Pondi in Breton ) is a French municipality with 14,606 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany . It is a sub-prefecture of the arrondissement of the same name , capital of the canton of the same name and seat of the community association Pontivy Communauté .
geography
Pontivy is located on the Blavet River and on the Canal de Nantes à Brest , which flows into the Blavet here.
history
The Nillizien tumulus dates from the Iron Age.
The monk Ivy founded Pontivy in the 7th century . He had a bridge built over the Blavet, which gave the city its name. On the 18th Brumaire of the year XII of the Revolution ( November 9th 1804 ) the name of the city was changed to Napoléonville . After the fall of Napoleon I , it was called Pontivy again, then Bourbonville , then again for a few years (under Napoléon III ) Napoléonville and from 1870 again Pontivy.
In February 2016, Pontivy was one of 13 municipalities that belonged to level 3 of the Charter Ya d'ar brezhoneg for the promotion of the Breton language.

Transport links
The departmental roads D764 and D768 cross near the city. The railway lines from Saint-Brieuc and Auray meet in Pontivy . The former is not used by passenger traffic and is interrupted in the further course, the latter only by a few tourist trains. Two routes of the former Chemins de fer du Morbihan also ran through Pontivy.
