history

Historically, the municipality belongs to the Breton region of Bro-Gwened (French: Vannetais) and within this region to the Bro Baod (French: Pays de Baud) area and shares its history.

The menhir of the village of Bézo and the gallery grave of Kergonpfalz bear witness to a prehistoric settlement. The area was later colonized by the Romans , a Roman road from Vannes to Corseul crossed the eastern end of the municipality. Remains of a Roman camp can be found in the north of the Bourg from the 19th century.

Guillaume de Bignan helped found the Prières monastery in 1252. The place is first mentioned in 1421 under the name Bingnen . Before the 15th century, Bignan belonged to the vice-county of Porhoët , then to the rule of Rohan . The Templars are said to have built several facilities in the area, including the Trinity Chapel.

During the French Revolution , Bignan was a center of the Chouannerie . Pierre Guillemot from Bignan, also known as the "King of Bignan", served as a lieutenant under Georges Cadoudal . From 1793 until its dissolution in 1801, Bignan was the capital of a canton of the same name. Since then, the municipality has been assigned to the canton of Saint-Jean-Brévelay. In 1835 the parish priest founded a religious community to teach young girls. In 1864 Bignan gave part of his parish land to the then newly founded parish of Colpo .

The Morbihan department acquired the Kerguéhennec property in 1972 and opened a contemporary art center here in 1986 .
