The Notre-Dame chapel in Kerdroguen

Colpo ( Breton Kolpoù ) is a French municipality with 2,222 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany .

geography

Colpo is located around 20 kilometers north of Vannes in the center of the Morbihan department. Neighboring municipalities are Bignan in the north, Saint-Jean-Brévelay in the east, Locqueltas in the southeast, Locmaria-Grand-Champ in the south, Grand-Champ in the southwest and west and Moustoir-Ac in the west and northwest.

history

There is little evidence of the early history of the community. There are remains from prehistoric and Gallo-Roman times. These were found in Alt-Colpo, a little north of today's Colpo. The place was first mentioned by name in 1440 under the name Scolpou . The community was part of various feudal lords in the Middle Ages. Historically, the municipality belongs to the Pays de Vannes (Breton: Bro-Gwened). After the French Revolution , it was a combat zone between Republican troops and the Chouans. Politically, Colpo only became an independent municipality in 1864 through the cession of territory to the municipalities of Bignan, Grand-Champ and Saint-Jean-Brévelay. From then on, Colpo belonged to the arrondissement of Vannes and the canton of Grand-Champ (also Grandchamp).

Population development

The population grew strongly between 1866 and 1876 (1866–1876: +32%). After an almost equally strong decline in the following years, a slight phase of growth began that lasted until the beginning of the First World War. From 1921, the number of inhabitants remained at around 1200 for decades. The population has been growing again since 1975 and has now reached new highs every year. The development:
