Plougoumelen ( bret. : Plougouvelen ) is a French municipality with 2439 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Vannes and the canton of Vannes-2 .
geography
Plougoumelen is located near the coast of the Morbihan department. The city of Vannes is only about 12 km to the east.
history
The place has been inhabited since the earliest times. The Kervoyal dolmen testifies to this . Historically it belongs to the Vannetais (Breton: Bro Gwened). In the Middle Ages it was subject to different lords. The most important of these families are the Pont-Sal. Politically, Plougoumelen became a municipality in 1790. From 1793 the community belonged to the canton of Bubry and the district of Hennebont. From 1801 it was part of the Lorient arrondissement and from 1801 to 2015 a municipality in the canton of Auray .
Population development
Between 1793 and 1911 the population grew more and more - with small, temporary swings downwards - and reached its first peak. After the First World War, the number of residents (as a result of war losses and the flu) fell significantly. By 1946 the population grew again. In the years between 1946 and 1954 there was a wave of emigration. The population has been growing steadily and rapidly since 1962 (1962-2012: + 232%). The development:
