Nivillac , Breton : Nivilieg , is a commune with 4612 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the Morbihan department in the region of Brittany in northwest France . It is part of the Communauté de communes Arc Sud Bretagne . It is part of the arrondissement of Vannes and the canton of Muzillac . The inhabitants are called Nivillacois (es) .
geography
The river Vilaine limits the municipality to the west and north. Nivillac is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Béganne in the north, Saint-Dolay in the east, Missilac and Herbinac in the south, La Roche-Bernard in the south-west, Marzan in the west and Péaule in the north-west. Route Nationale 165 runs through the municipality .
history
Human traces can be traced back to the Neolithic . The place name, probably derived from Nociliacum , is of Gallo-Roman origin. In the 5th century the priory “Notre-Dame de Moutonnas” was founded here. It was destroyed during the wars of religion and the time of the French Revolution . A cross from 1903 commemorates them today.
