The village church of Saint-Pierre in Marzan

Marzan ( Breton Marzhan ) is a French municipality with 2,308 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany .

geography

Marzan is located about 30 kilometers north of Saint-Nazaire and 35 kilometers east of Vannes in the southeast of the department. The river Vilaine forms part of the municipal boundary. Neighboring municipalities are Péaule in the north, Nivillac and La Roche-Bernard in the east, Férel in the south, Arzal and Muzillac in the south-west and Noyal-Muzillac and Le Guerno in the north-west.

history

There is little evidence of the early history of the community. Remains from prehistoric and Gallo-Roman times prove an early settlement. The document collection of the Redon Abbey first mentions the place under the name Marsin in 895. In the Middle Ages, various feudal lords exercised suzerainty. Among them are the Lords of Marzan. Historically, Marzan belongs to the Vannetais oriental region (Breton: Reter Bro Gwened). Under the Ancien Régime it was part of the County of Rochefort. After the French Revolution it was a battle zone between Republican troops and the Chouans. Politically, Marzan became a municipality in 1790. From 1793 Marzan belonged to the canton of Péaule and the district of La Roche Bernard. From 1801 it was part of the arrondissement of Vannes and from 1801 to 2015 a municipality in the canton of La Roche-Bernard . From 1903 to 1947 it had a station for the Chemins de fer du Morbihan .

In 1944 the Wehrmacht executed a whole family because of their membership in the Resistance .

Population development

The population fell sharply between 1793 and 1821 (1793–1821: −17%). But it fluctuated between 1800 and 1936 in a range of 1700 to 1900 residents. After the Second World War until 1975, the population was always stable between 1500 and 1600 residents. The population has increased significantly since 1999 (1999–2012: +28%) and has now reached a new historical high. The development:
