Surzur ( Breton Surzhur ) is a French municipality with 4,429 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany .
geography
Surzur is located in the south of the Morbihan department. It is about 15 kilometers to Vannes .
history
Menhirs testify to the early colonization by the Gauls. The Roman road from Vannes to Nantes ran through the municipality. Finds during excavations also show the permanent settlement. Remnants of a pottery from the 4th century were unearthed. The Templars erected various buildings that are no longer preserved today. In the Middle Ages it belonged to various liege lords. After the French Revolution, the area was devastated by skirmishes between French government troops and supporters of the Chouannerie . Surzur only became an independent municipality in 1790. During World War II, the Wehrmacht confiscated the manor house of Pérénes. Until 1947 the place was connected to the network of Chemins de fer du Morbihan .
Population development
In 1800 the number of inhabitants was 2587. This made it one of the most populous municipalities in the department. The number of people in the community fell for the first time in the Napoleonic era. From 1821 to 1911, the population remained at a high level of around 2,200. Then there was another loss of population. A second phase of stability followed between 1921 and 1946. In the years 1946 to 1954 there was another wave of emigration, which was followed by a third phase of stagnation until 1975. Since 1975 the number of residents has increased sharply due to the proximity to the city of Vannes (1975–2012: +170%).
