history

Chronicles mention the Saint-Marcoul church for the first time on October 14, 833. In the 12th century, the Knights of the Templar were the feudal lords. During the religious wars between Huguenots and the Catholic League, Carentoir was devastated. In the Middle Ages it belonged to various liege lords. After the French Revolution, the area was devastated by skirmishes between French government troops and supporters of the Chouannerie .

On May 2, 1863, the Quelneuc community was created by splitting off from Carentoir . This was incorporated back into Carentoir on January 1, 2017.

Population development

In 1800 the number of inhabitants was 5681. Until well into the 19th century, the population remained at a high level of over 5,000. Then there was a dramatic loss of population within less than two decades (1861–1876: −26%). After that, the number of residents stabilized over decades. Another wave of emigration occurred between 1911 and 1975 (−40%). Since this historic low, the population has increased again (1975–2012: + 16%).
