history

The area has been inhabited since the Stone Age. This is evidenced by finds from excavations that are attributed to the Hallstatt culture. Around a millennium lies between this time and the first mentions in chronicles of the early Middle Ages (in the 9th century). In the Middle Ages it belonged to various liege lords. After the French Revolution, the area was devastated by skirmishes between French government troops and supporters of the Chouannerie . During the Second World War there was a group of Resistance fighters in and around Sérent.

Population development

In the 19th and 20th centuries the population remained at a high level. This is in contrast to many other Breton communities. A decline only took place between 1931 and 1975, when the number of residents fell from 3,050 to just 2,399. This development changed afterwards and the community now has the same number of inhabitants as in 1931.
