Saint-Gildas-en-Rhuys Monastery

→ Main article: Monastery of Saint-Gildas-en-Rhuys

According to legend, the monastery of Saint-Gildas-en-Rhuys was founded in 536 by Saint Gildas , a British monk. The monastery grew rapidly in the centuries that followed, but was abandoned during the Norman invasions in the 9th and 10th centuries. At the beginning of the 11th century the monastery was re-established. Today's church buildings date from the late 11th and early 12th centuries. The church fell into disrepair in the 16th century, but was rebuilt in the second half of the 17th century by the architect Delourme. At the end of the 19th century, the remaining Romanesque components were restored. The well-preserved Romanesque ambulatory , which is one of the rare examples of Romanesque architecture in Brittany, and the reliquaries that can be viewed in the sacristy are particularly worth seeing today .
