Peillac ( Breton. Paolieg ) is a French municipality with 1858 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany . It belongs to the Redon Agglomération community association . The inhabitants are called Peillacois in French .

geography

Peillac is located in the Argoat , inner Brittany, between the rivers Oust in the north and Arz in the south and between the municipalities of Saint-Gravé in the north-west and Saint-Vincent-sur-Oust in the south-east, 44 kilometers east of Vannes . The D764 runs through the community.

history

On the Cranhac , the mountain north of the town center, there are remains of a Roman hill that is 200 meters long and 7 meters wide. The part of the Oust that borders this construction is popularly called Le Passage des Romains (Roman path).

Peillac was first mentioned in a document in the 9th century.

Peillac has community partnerships with Île de Batz and Saint-Nazaire in maritime Brittany and with the Romanian city ​​of Târgu Lăpuș .

Attractions

In the church of Peillac there is a stone, painted statue of Saint Sabulin ( Aubin of Angers ) from the 16th century, which was classified as a Monument historique (historical monument) in 1985 . The church itself was built in the 18th century.

In 1789 there were still four flour mills in the municipality, three of which were water mills . Today only the windmill of Cormier ( French: Speierling ) exists . It was built in 1640 and belonged to the Seigneur von Cranhac before the French Revolution . The last seigneur of Cranhac was Louis-Joachim-Paris Potier, duc de Gesvres, who was guillotined on July 7, 1794 after the trial of the indulgents . The mill later belonged to various millers and is now privately owned.
