Beignon ( Breton Benion ) is a French municipality with 1,863 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany .
geography
Beignon is about 40 kilometers west of Rennes in the north-east of the Morbihan department on the border with the Ille-et-Vilaine department . Neighboring communities are Paimpont in the north, Plélan-le-Grand in the northeast, Saint-Malo-de-Beignon in the southeast, Guer and Porcaro in the south and Campénéac in the west.
history
There is little evidence of the early history of the community. There are no remains from prehistoric and Gallo-Roman times. The place was first mentioned in 865 under the name Bicloën in the Redon Abbey collection of documents . In the Middle Ages it was the seat of an extensive deanery. This deanery became the Baronnie de Beignon. Historically, Beignon belongs to the Pays de Saint-Malo (Breton: Bro-Sant-Maloù) region. After the French Revolution it was a battle zone between Republican troops and the Chouans. Politically, Beignon became a municipality in 1790. From 1793, Beignon belonged to the canton of Campénéac and the district of Ploërmel. From 1801 it was part of the arrondissement of Vannes and a municipality in the canton of Guer .
Population development
The population fell sharply between 1793 and 1806 (1793–1806: −24%). After that, it rose briefly to over 1500 people. However, the number of residents between 1846 and 1886 always fluctuated in a range from 1300 to 1400 residents. The first wave of emigration followed in the years from 1891 to 1911. This took on dramatic proportions between 1911 and 1921, because the army expropriated significant parts of the municipality for a military base (1911–1921: −45%). At that time 520 people were resettled from eleven places and hamlets in the municipality of Beignon . Between 1921 and the low of the population in 1962, the population only fell slightly. After a jump up in the following six years, a phase of stagnation followed until 1990. Since then, the population has increased sharply (1990–2012: +150%) and has now almost reached the historical high of 1793 again. The development:
