Saint-Dolay ( Breton Sant-Aelwez ) is a French municipality with 2,487 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany .
geography
Saint-Dolay is located about 30 km south of Saint-Nazaire and about 47 kilometers east of Vannes in the southeast of the department. The river Vilaine forms the northern boundary of the municipality.
history
There is little evidence of the early history of the community. Remains from prehistoric and Gallo-Roman times prove an early settlement. The collection of documents of the Redon Abbey first mentions the place under the name of Saint-Aelwod in 916. In the Middle Ages, the Baron von La Roche-Bernard exercised suzerainty. However, no less than twenty feudal lords took over the administration . Three of these feudal lords (Du Hirel, Du Plessis and de Cadouzan) adopted Calvinism during the Reformation . After the French Revolution it was a battle zone between Republican troops and the Chouans. Politically, Saint-Dolay became a municipality in 1790. From 1793 Saint-Dolay belonged to the canton of La Roche Bernard and the district of La Roche Bernard. From 1801 it was part of the arrondissement of Vannes and from 1801 to 2015 a municipality in the canton of La Roche-Bernard .
Population development
The population fell sharply between 1793 and 1800. This was followed by a period of low growth (1800–1831). A growth phase followed over the next 55 years. Thereafter the number of residents remained stable until 1906. From this point on, there was a long emigration phase that only ended in 1975. Since 1999 the population has increased significantly (1999–2012: +21%). Nevertheless, the number of people living in Saint-Dolay is far below the population peak of 1906. The development:
