The short program was the most technically advanced in figure skating history. A total of 27 quadruple jumps were attempted, with seven men each showing two quadruple jumps. Eight runners exceeded the 90-point mark and three exceeded the 100-point mark. Defending champion Javier Fernández won the short program with a personal best of 109.05 points. Besides him, Shōma Uno and Patrick Chan also broke the 100-point mark thanks to personal bests. The strong jumpers Nathan Chen and Jin Boyang and Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyū were still within reach of the first three .

The latter went into the freestyle as the first of the last group and showed a faultless freestyle, which with a rating of 223.20 points meant a new world record. Despite the lead over Hanyū, no one managed to wrest his second world title from the Japanese. However, compatriot Shōma Uno came threateningly close to him, who won his first World Cup medal with silver. As in the previous year, the bronze medal went to the Chinese Jin Boyang. The eagerly awaited performance by US champion Nathan Chen ended with a record of six attempted quadruple jumps. However, he couldn't land two of them, so in the end it wasn't enough for a medal. Patrick Chan and Javier Fernández also made too many mistakes to defend their podium position.

A total of 47 quadruple jumps were attempted by the participants in the freestyle. Three runners reached the 200-point mark with their freestyle, Shōma Uno and Jin Boyang for the first time in their careers. In the overall ranking, the first four runners exceeded the 300-point mark, and Shōma Uno and Jin Boyang succeeded in this for the first time.

Yevgenia Medvedeva defended her title from the previous year by a large margin. This makes her the first Russian woman to defend the women's figure skating title. Michelle Kwan had her last title defense ever in 2001. The Canadians Kaetlyn Osmond and Gabrielle Daleman were surprisingly able to secure their first medals at world championships with silver and bronze. It was the first time in history that two Canadians stood on the podium.
