Piper Gilles (born January 16, 1992 in Rockford , Illinois , United States ) is an American - Canadian ice dancer who has competed for Canada in international competitions since 2011.

Life

Gilles ran from January 2003 with Timothy McKernan , with whom she danced third at the 2007 US Junior Championships and second place in 2008. On May 22, 2008, they ended their partnership. The following summer she formed a team with Zachary Donohue ; with him she made her international debut on September 21, 2008. They won the “ISU Junior Grand Prix” series in Ostrava, Czech Republic . At the US Junior Championships in 2009, they finished third. But in May 2010, the ice dancing couple announced their separation. Gilles then took a year off from the competition.

On July 27, she formed a pair with the Canadian Paul Poirier , but Gilles still needed the US Figure Skating Federation's permission to run for Canada from this point on, without which she would not have been able to participate in international competitions. Gilles and Poirier trained at the Scarboro Figure Skating Club in Scarborough , Ontario under their trainer, Carol Lane. In 2012 they reached third place at the Canadian Championships. In the same year they won the "US Classics" of the "ISU Challenger Series" in Salt Lake City .

Piper Gilles became a Canadian citizen during the 2013/14 season in order to be able to compete in the Olympic Games for Canada. Because she was only fourth at the Canadian national championships, she missed participation in Sochi in 2014 . In the same season, however, Gilles won the silver medal at the Four Continents Championships with Poirier .

In the following years, the ice dancing couple took part regularly in world championships, in which they placed eighth; her best result was sixth place in 2015 . Second place at the Canadian Championships 2017 behind Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir also meant participation in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . After finishing ninth in the short program and eighth in the freestyle, this meant that Gilles and Poirier were eighth overall in the final ranking.
