Rockford is a city and the administrative seat of Winnebago County in the north of the US state Illinois . In 2000, Rockford had 150,115 residents, a number that fell to 147,651 by 2016.
Rockford, which is the core city of the Rockford metropolitan area , is the third largest city in Illinois after Chicago and Aurora .
Rockford is home to the historic Herrick Cobblestone House on Broadway , which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 .
The city is the seat of the Diocese of Rockford .

Rockford lies on both sides of the Rock River . The city extends over 145.15 km², which is spread over 143.36 km² of land and 1.79 km² of water.
On the western edge of Rockford, Interstate 39 runs in a north-south direction , which is congruent on this section with US Highway 51 . On the southeastern outskirts of the city, this highway meets Interstate 90 coming from the southeast . The US Highway 20 runs west-east direction through the city. The Illinois State Highway 2 , 70 and 251 meet in the center of each other.
Rockford is also the hub of several railway lines operated by various operating companies.
Chicago Rockford International Airport is around nine kilometers south of the city .
The nearest major cities are Chicago (141 km southeast), Milwaukee in neighboring Wisconsin (151 km northeast), Wisconsin's capital Madison (119 km north), Dubuque at the intersection of the three states of Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa (149 km west), the Quad Cities at the confluence of the Rock River with the Mississippi River (182 km southwest) and Peoria (214 km south).

26.7 percent were under 18 years of age, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44, 20.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.1 percent 65 and over. The mean age was 34 years. For every 100 women there were statistically 93.1 men, 88.9 among the over 18 year olds.
