James E. Cartwright

James E. "Hoss" Cartwright (born September 22, 1949 in Rockford , Illinois ) is an American general in the Marine Corps and was from August 3, 2007 until his retirement in 2011, the eighth Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff .

In addition, he was probably the idea generator and ultimately also the project manager of the "Operation Olympic Games", in the context of which the Stuxnet computer worm was developed and used against Iranian nuclear facilities. In June 2013, the US Department of Justice announced that it had opened an investigation into Cartwright, alleging that he himself passed information about the existence of the program to the New York Times in 2010 , which ultimately led to the exposure of the operation .

Military career

Cartwright was born in Rockford, Illinois, the oldest of six children and the only boy in the family. After graduating from high school , he studied medicine at the University of Iowa and graduated with pre-medicine in 1971 .

He joined the US Marine Corps in 1971 after completing his studies , completed the Naval Officer Aviation Training Program and graduated in 1973. In January 1977 he graduated as a pilot in the Marines and flew the F-4 "Phantom II" and the F / A-18 "Hornet" .

He graduated from Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in 1986 and received a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategy from Naval War College in 1991 .

The first higher command duties were from 1992 the command of the Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 232 and from 1994 to 1996 the Marine Aircraft Group 31. From 1996 to 1999 he served in the Joint Staff as Deputy Director for Force Structure, Resources and Assessment ( J-8 ). In 1999 he took over a troop command and served until 2000 as deputy commanding general of the Marine Forces Atlantic. He then took over command of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing for two years , before moving back to the Pentagon in 2002 and taking over the post of Director for Force Structure, Resources and Procurement (J-8) in the Joint Staff until 2004. From 2004 to 2007 Cartwright commanded the US Strategic Command (STRATCOM), the global command of the US nuclear forces.

After the Armed Services Committee of the US Senate approved the nomination of Cartwright as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on August 3, 2007, Cartwright took over the office of Admiral Edmund P. Giambastiani , who had already been in the on July 27, 2007 Retired. Cartwright's official swearing-in at the post took place on August 31st. On August 10, he temporarily handed over command of USSTRATCOM to Lieutenant General C. Robert Kehler , as his nominated successor Kevin P. Chilton still had to be confirmed by the US Senate.

In 2011 Cartwright retired.

On October 17, 2016, he pleaded guilty to falsely denying, during an official investigation, that he was the source of classified information contained in a book by David E. Sanger . Neither the subject of the allegations nor the specific book have been published; however, Sanger wrote about the Stuxnet virus .
