The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal ( GWOTSM ; German medal for service in the war on terror ) is a military award of the armed forces of the United States . Created in 2003 by decree of the then US President George W. Bush , the GWOTSM has since been awarded to members of the armed forces for their use in the war on terror .

Award criteria

The GWOTSM was introduced - together with the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal - with Executive Order 13289 of March 12, 2003. To receive the award, members of the armed forces must serve at least 30 consecutive days or 60 non-consecutive days in a designated anti-terrorist operation . For those on duty who come under fire, are wounded or fall during their assignment, these time requirements are not applicable. In principle, the award may also be awarded posthumously .

The award of the GWOTSM does not require direct participation in combat operations; support activities for deployed troops can also entitle them to receive the award.

The first mission which (subsequently authorized by decree of 2003) entitled to receive the award was the so-called “Airport Security Operation”, which took place between September 27, 2001 and May 31, 2002. Other operations were Operation Enduring Freedom , Operation Noble Eagle and Operation Iraqi Freedom . Whether an operation justifies the award of the award is - subject to the approval of the United General Staff and the Ministry of Defense - at the discretion of the responsible commanders of the main command of the armed forces involved .

The GWOTSM is only awarded once, service stars , as can be acquired with other awards, are not provided.

Appearance

The medal is a bronze-colored metal disc 3.175 cm in diameter. The obverse shows an eagle with outspread wings, whose chest is covered by a shield with 13 vertical stripes. In its right claw the eagle holds an olive branch, in the left three arrows. The head of the eagle is surrounded by a stylized globe and the words WAR ON TERRORISM SERVICE. The reverse of the medal shows a branch of laurel.

The medal is worn on a 3.5 cm wide blue ribbon, interwoven with golden yellow, scarlet and white stripes.
