The Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal ( GWOTEM ; German medal for foreign deployments in the war on terror ) is a military award of the armed forces of the United States . Created in 2003 by decree of the then US President George W. Bush , the GWOTEM was initially awarded to members of the armed forces for missions in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of the war on terror until the end of April 2005, but was then awarded to these countries from May 2005 replaced the Iraq Campaign Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal ; However, the award will still be given for missions at other locations.

Award criteria

The GWOTEM was introduced - together with the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal - with Executive Order 13289 of March 12, 2003. To receive the award, members of the armed forces must serve at least 30 consecutive days or 60 non-consecutive days in a designated anti-terrorist operation . For those on duty who come under fire, are wounded or fall during their assignment, these time requirements are not applicable.

Unlike the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal , which is awarded for service within the United States , the GWOTEM is only awarded for missions abroad. This includes assignments in a total of 50 countries, including Egypt , Algeria , Azerbaijan , Ethiopia , Bahrain , Bosnia-Herzegovina , Bulgaria , Burkina Faso , Diego Garcia , Djibouti , Eritrea , Georgia , Guantanamo Bay ( Cuba ), Iran , Israel , Colombia , Crete , Chad , Hungary and Cyprus .

The GWOTEM is only awarded once, service stars , as they can be acquired with other awards, are not provided.
