The Iraq Campaign Medal was a military decoration of the US forces , which at the direction of George W. Bush was introduced on May 28 of 2004. The Afghanistan Campaign Medal was launched on the same day. The design of the order comes from the US Army Institute of Heraldry. The award was presented in the period from June 2005 to December 31, 2011.
The award was given to members of the US armed forces who served in Iraq and its territorial waters . In order to receive this award, a soldier had to serve at least 30 consecutive days or a total of at least 60 days in the prescribed area. The medal was awarded retroactively to March 19, 2003, so that soldiers who had served in Iraq before the official award date (June 2005) also received the Iraq Campaign Medal. The award of the order was limited to the duration of Operation Iraqi Freedom .
Soldiers who died or were wounded while deployed in Iraq before the stipulated period of 30 days were also awarded the medal. It made no difference whether a soldier was harmed by accident or by enemy action.
