Roy James Tarpley (born November 28, 1964 in New York City , New York - † January 9, 2015 in Arlington , Texas ) was an American basketball player . Tarpley played during his career with the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA as well as for various clubs in Europe and Asia. Tarpley received special attention during his career due to his substance abuse , for which he was banned by the NBA several times.
Life
In the 1986 NBA draft , Tarpley was selected seventh by the Dallas Mavericks . In 1988 Tarpley won the Sixth Man of the Year award for best banker in the league. During the 1988-1989 season he was suspended from the league for being under the influence of drugs. He returned for the 1989–1990 season, scoring 16.8 points and 13.1 rebounds in 45 games. In 1991 he tested positive for drugs twice, so he was banned from the league for three years. In the meantime he played in lower class American basketball leagues and in Greece, where he was Greek champion and cup winner with Olympiakos . In 1994 Tarpley returned to the Mavericks, but was banned for life after another offense. He returned to Greece, where he played for various clubs between 1995 and 1999. In 1999 he moved to Russia and in 2000 to the People's Republic of China . From 2003 he played again for lower class basketball teams before ending his career in 2006.
Tarpley completed 280 NBA games for the Mavericks and scored 12.6 points and 10.0 rebounds on average.
He died on January 9, 2015 at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital.
