Leandro Mateus Barbosa (partly also: Leandrinho Barbosa ; born November 28, 1982 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian basketball player who is currently under contract with Minas in Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) in Brazil.
He is 1.92 meters tall and is usually used in the position of the shooting guard , but can also play as a point guard .
Career
Start time
Barbosa began his professional career at the Brazilian second division club Palmeiras . In January 2001 he then moved to the first division to Bauru Tilibra , where he was named the best rookie of the year in his first full season . In 2002/03 he was already the second best scorer in the league.
NBA
Barbosa was selected in the 2003 draft in 28th place by the San Antonio Spurs , but was immediately transferred to the Phoenix Suns . There he got a lot of playing time , especially after the departure of Stephon Marbury and Penny Hardaway in the course of his debut season and was regularly in the starting five , which he justified with solid performances.
Since the move from Steve Nash and Quentin Richardson to the Suns in 2004, Barbosa could no longer assert himself as a regular player. Raja Bell replaced Richardson in 2005 as a starter in the shooting guard position, but Barbosa increased to an average of 27.9 minutes of use and 13.1 points. In 2007 he was voted NBA Sixth Man of the Year by a large margin . Although Barbosa started in only 18 of his 80 games of the season, he averaged 18.1 points and 4.0 assists per game. In 2010 he reached the Western Conference finals with the Suns .
Barbosa then moved to the Toronto Raptors . In the course of the lockout in 2011, he signed a contract with Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . After the lockout ended, he returned to the Toronto Raptors. In March 2012, he was transferred to the Indiana Pacers against a second-round draft pick .
For the 2012/2013 season Barbosa received no new contract with the Pacers and was initially without a club. In October 2012, he finally joined the Boston Celtics . There he got a contract until 2013. On February 11, Barbosa tore his cruciate ligament in a game against the Charlotte Bobcats and was out the rest of the season.
In February 2013, he and Jason Collins were transferred to the Washington Wizards for Jordan Crawford .
Barbosa spent the 2013/2014 season with his former team Phoenix Suns and was able to draw attention to himself again with solid performances. After his contract expired, he then moved to the Golden State Warriors in summer 2014 , with whom he won the title in the 2014/15 season .
Brazilian national team
Barbosa was already used at the 2002 World Cup , where Brazil reached the quarter-finals. At the American Championship in 2005, which Brazil finished as the winner, Barbosa was elected to the All-Tournament Team and hit 5 throws from beyond the three-point line in the last quarter of the final game alone .
After the disappointing qualifying round at the 2006 World Cup , Barbosa led Brazil to the semi-finals as top scorer at the 2007 American Championships . Two years later, Brazil won the title at the 2009 American Championships, Barbosa himself was the tournament's second-best scorer .
At the 2010 World Cup , Barbosa reached the round of 16 with Brazil. After reaching the finals at the 2011 American Championships , he first took part in the Olympic Games in 2012 .
