Anfernee Deon "Penny" Hardaway (born July 18, 1971 in Memphis , Tennessee ) is a former American basketball player who was active from 1993 to 2007 in the NBA . Hardaway was one of the most popular players in the sport in the 1990s. In 2018, Hardaway became a coach at the University of Memphis , where he also played in college.

Career

After three years at Memphis State University ( University of Memphis since 1994 ), he signed up for the 1993 NBA Draft . The Golden State Warriors voted him in third place to immediately swap him for the Orlando Magic number one drafted Chris Webber . Hardaway's first season was very successful. So he was MVP of the Rookie All-Star Games and second in the election for Rookie of the Year , behind Chris Webber. For his accomplishments in Orlando, Hardaway was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1994 .

At the Magic he met center Shaquille O'Neal , who joined the team in 1992 and with whom the point guard Hardaway formed a congenial duo until 1996. Hardaway had his best years in sport during this time. In his second year he was invited to the NBA All-Star Game and appointed to the All-NBA First Team . Three more invitations to the All-Star Game should follow. He scored about 20 points and 7 assists per game during that time. In the 1994/95 season , the Magic made it to the NBA finals, which, however, was lost 4-0 to the Houston Rockets . On November 8, 1995 Hardaway reached his career best with 42 points against the New Jersey Nets .

In 1996 he was a member of Dream Team III, which won gold at the Atlanta Olympics .

After O'Neal moved to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996 , Hardaway was the sole team leader. However, he could not compensate for the departure of the dominant center. Serious injuries kept throwing him back; so he completed only 19 games in the 1997/98 season .

1999 transferred the Magic Hardaway to the Phoenix Suns , in exchange for Danny Manning , Pat Garrity and two future first-round draft picks . In Phoenix, Hardaway's injury misery continued (only four games in the 2000/01 season ), so that, with the exception of the 1999/2000 season, he could no longer bring his services to the usual extent. His point yield fell from an average of 18 with the Magic to about 10 points per game with the Suns. Still, Hardaway was an important player in the Suns rotation.

In 2004 Hardaway was sent, among others, with Stephon Marbury in exchange for Howard Eisley , Charlie Ward , Antonio McDyess , Maciej Lampe , the draft rights to Miloš Vujanić , a first-round draft pick for 2004 and another future first-round pick to the New York Knicks . For the Knicks, he completed 83 games in three years and scored 8.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

In February 2006, Hardaway and Trevor Ariza returned to Orlando in exchange for Steve Francis . There Hardaway was released from his contract a few days later without having played a game for the team.

After the 2005/06 season he retired from active sports because of knee problems.

In 2007-08 he made a comeback to the NBA and was signed by the Miami Heat . On December 12th, Hardaway was released from the Florida team after 16 games.

During his career, Hardaway averaged 15.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game in 704 games.

Coaching career

After coaching a Memphis high school between 2015 and 2018, Hardaway was introduced as the new coach of the University of Memphis in March 2018 , for which he played in his college career from 1991 to 1993.

Others

After retiring, Hardaway opened a barber shop and beauty salon in Memphis.

In 2012 he became a partner in the Memphis Grizzlies .
