Charlie Ward (born October 12, 1970 in Thomasville , Georgia ) is a retired American basketball and American football player. As a quarterback from Florida State University , he won the 1993 Heisman Trophy in college football . Even so, he decided against a career in the National Football League (NFL) and instead chose a career as a basketball player in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

In the 1994 NBA Draft , the New York Knicks selected him as the 26th player in the first round. At the side of Patrick Ewing Ward reached the Knicks at the NBA Finals 1999, where they lost to the San Antonio Spurs .

In January 2004, the Knicks exchanged Charlie Ward - along with Antonio McDyess , Howard Eisley , Maciej Lampe , the rights to Miloš Vujanić , two first-round draft rights and money - to the Phoenix Suns . In return, the Knicks received Stephon Marbury , Penny Hardaway and Cezary Trybański . Ward was released from the Suns just one day after this swap. A few days later he moved to the San Antonio Spurs, for whom he played until the end of the season.

Before the 2004/05 season, he moved to the Houston Rockets , where he ended his professional career in 2005.
