Patrick Aloysius Ewing (born August 5, 1962 in Kingston ) is a former Jamaican - American basketball player and current coach. He is currently under contract as head coach for the college team at Georgetown Hoyas .

Ewing was active most of his professional career for the New York Knicks , where he was eleven times NBA All-Star and twice reached the NBA Finals. He is considered to be one of the best NBA players who couldn't win a championship in their entire career. He was named to the list of the 50 best NBA players of all time ; In 2008 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame . Jersey number 33 is no longer awarded by the Knicks in honor of Ewing. Ewing is widely believed to be one of the best center players of all time.

Career

college

Ewing attended Georgetown College until 1985 . He led his college team to the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship that year . In 1985 he was named "College Player of the Year" and selected first in the NBA draft by the New York Knicks .

NBA

For most of his NBA career, Ewing played with the Knicks (1985-2000). In his debut season, he won the Rookies of the Year award for best newcomer to the league and was accordingly appointed to the NBA All-Rookie Team . Ewing led the Knicks to the NBA finals in 1994 and 1999, but lost both times. During his time in New York Ewing was 11 times NBA All-Star (ten times in a row from 1988 to 1997) and 7 times a member of the All-NBA team . No other player has scored more points for the team, blocked throws, collected rebounds , or brought steals .

From 1997 to 2001 Ewing was president of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA). At the end of his career he played one season each with the Seattle SuperSonics (2000-2001) and the Orlando Magic (2001-2002). Ewing averaged 21.0 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.45 blocks in 1,183 NBA games.

Ewing played 15 seasons (1985-2000) for the New York Knicks

He is one of four players who took more than 800 NBA games to reach the first Triple Double : Karl Malone (860), Ewing (834), Tony Parker (826) and Cedric Maxwell (824). He was also the first player in NBA history to be in the starting five for the first 1,000 games of his career .

In 1984, while still a college player at Georgetown University , Ewing was a member of the US Olympic team that won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles,

At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, ​​Ewing once again won the gold medal as part of the now legendary Dream Team .

As a trainer

Ewing began his coaching career as an assistant with the Washington Wizards , then he worked for the Houston Rockets for three years in the same position before he was poached by Stan Van Gundy for the Orlando Magic .

From 2013 to 2017 Ewing was Associate Head Coach at the Charlotte Hornets .

In April 2017, he signed a contract as head coach of the college basketball team at Georgetown Hoyas .

Trivia

In 1996, Ewing starred alongside NBA stars Michael Jordan , Charles Barkley , Larry Johnson and Muggsy Bogues in the animated film Space Jam .

He has a close friendship with his long-time center rival Alonzo Mourning . When Mourning needed a donor kidney, Ewing had himself tested as a living donor . However, Mourning's cousin's kidney was judged more appropriate.

His son Patrick Ewing Jr. also played for Georgetown in the NCAA and later in the NBA. He was also active for Telekom Baskets Bonn in the German Basketball Bundesliga (BBL).
