Geoffrey Michael Petrie (born April 17, 1948 in Pennsylvania , Pennsylvania ) is a retired American basketball player and manager.

Career

Petrie was the first player to be selected by the newly formed Portland Trail Blazers in the 1970 NBA Draft . He played in his debut season in the NBA All-Star Game and was co- rookie of the year with Dave Cowens in 1971. In his first year he scored an average of 24.8 points. Until 2005 he held the club's internal record for the most points in a game with 51 points. This record was set in 2005 by Damon Stoudamire . In 1974, Petrie received his second All-Star nomination.

In 1976, Petrie was transferred to the Atlanta Hawks for Maurice Lucas , but had to retire at the age of 27 due to a serious knee injury. However, the Blazers withdrew his jersey number 45 in his honor. In his six-year NBA career, Petrie averaged 21.8 points.

After his career, Petrie initially worked in business before returning to the Blazers in 1985 and held various positions. In 1994, Petrie was hired by the Sacramento Kings as a manager. In this position he restructured the Kings into a successful team in the early 2000s, for which he received the NBA Executive of the Year Award in 1999 and 2001 . He stayed in this position until 2013 when he was replaced by Pete D'Alessandro .
