Damian Lamonte Ollie Lillard (born July 15, 1990 in Oakland , California ) is an American basketball player who plays on the position of point guard for the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA . He was selected sixth by the Blazers in the 2012 NBA Draft after playing for Weber State University for four years .

Lillard was voted NBA Rookie of the Year after his debut season and has been voted All-Star 5 times and the All-NBA team 3 times in the further course of his career . His five All-Star Awards are the most in the history of the Portland Trail Blazers (along with Clyde Drexler ).

High school and college days

High school

Lillard played for Oakland High School, where he averaged over 28 points per game, with 45 points in one game. After high school, Lillard chose Weber State University in the state of Utah .

college

In his 2008-09 freshman season, he led his university team, the Weber State Wildcats , to win the Big Sky Conference regular season . In its senior season, the team reached the finals of the Big Sky Conference with a record of 14 wins and only 2 defeats. He was named a Big Sky MVP . At the end of the season he led the statistics in points (24.5).

NBA career

2012/13 season

Lillard was selected 6th in the 2012 NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers , making him the Weber State University's highest draft pick. In his first game, he scored 23 points and 11 assists against the Lakers . Oscar Robertson (21 points, 10 assists in 1960), Isiah Thomas (31 points, 11 assists in 1981) and Michael Carter-Williams (22 points, 12 assists in 2013) are the only players besides Lillard who have at least Got 20 points and at least 10 assists in their first NBA game. In his first three NBA games he was able to achieve an average of 21.3 points and 9.0 assists. Only two other players in NBA history succeeded: Oscar Robertson (1960) for the Cincinnati Royals (24.0 points, 10.0 assists) and John Wall (2010) for the Washington Wizards (23.7 points, 10.3 Assists). In his first 10 games he reached 19.0 points and 6.1 assists. Isiah Thomas last achieved at least 19.0 points and 6.0 assists as a rookie in 1981 (21.2 points and 6.9 assists). In his 22nd game of the season he scored the 400th point and delivered the 140th assist. Only three players reached this mark faster: Oscar Robertson (17th game, 1960), Isiah Thomas (1981) and Allen Iverson (1996) (both in 21st game). At the All-Star-Weekend 2013 he was able to win the Skills Challenge . At the end of his first NBA season, he was named Rookie of the Year 2013. He closed the season with 19.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game and was appointed to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.

2013/14 season

In his sophomore year, Lillard was first called into the NBA All-Star Game . Through the All-Star-Weekend 2014 he became the first player to take part in all five competitions (Slam Dunk Contest, Three-Point Shootout, Skills Challenge, Shooting Stars Challenge, Rookie Challenge). Together with Trey Burke , he managed to defend his Skills Challenge title from the previous year. Lillard finished the season with 20.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 5.6 assists on average.

2014/15 season

In 2015, Lillard was nominated for the All-Star Game after the injury to Blake Griffin . Lillard's 21.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 6.2 assists, with which he ended the season, meant career bests for him in all these categories.

2015/16 season

With a total of 828 converted three-pointers after the 2015/16 season, he managed to set a new franchise record, which he took from Wesley Matthews (826). Contrary to general expectations, Portland played a good season, which was not least thanks to Lillard, who set up a career record of 25 points per game. Portland qualified as a result for the playoffs, Lillard was passed over that year in the All-Star election.

Season 2016/17

In the 2016/17 season on April 9, 2017, Lillard not only set a career record of 59 points in the game against Utah Jazz , Lillard also broke the internal franchise record of Damon Stoudamire , who had previously held this record with 54 points. Lillard closed the season with a new career high of 27.0 points per game. He also got an average of 4.9 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game.

Season 2017/18

With 26.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game, Lillard was able to build on the performances of the previous season. After two years of abstinence, he was nominated again for the All-Star Game this season. With 49 wins and 33 defeats, the Trail Blazers landed third in the Western Conference, but had to admit defeat to the New Orleans Pelicans 4-0 in the first round in the playoffs .

Season 2018/19

Lillard was able to play his fourth all-star game this season and finished the regular season with an average of 25.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 6.9 assists.

In the 2019 playoffs, Lillard succeeded in the fifth game of the first round against the Oklahoma City Thunder with the decisive throw ( buzzer beater ) to win his Blazers. Lillard scored a total of 50 points, hit ten three-point throws and thus led the Trailblazers into the conference semifinals. The Trail Blazers were able to advance to the Western Conference Finals, but were beaten 4-0 to the Golden State Warriors .

Season 2019/20

On November 8, 2019, Lillard broke his franchise record for most points scored in a game when he scored 60 points in the Blazers' 115-119 loss to the Brooklyn Nets .

On January 20, 2020, Lillard beat his franchise record of November 8, 2019: In the game against the Golden State Warriors , he scored 61 points.

On January 29, 2020, Lillard scored his first triple-double (36 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds) in the 125: 112 win against the Houston Rockets. In that game Lillard was also able to equalize an NBA record: With six three-pointers scored, his performances from the last games added up to 33 successfully converted three-point throws in four consecutive games. Only Stephen Curry ( Golden State Warriors ) had previously succeeded in doing this in February 2016. The high number of converted three-point throws continued in the subsequent games, so that Lillard set a new record on February 2, 2020 with the game against Utah Jazz: 49 converted three-point throws in six consecutive games had never before been achieved by an NBA player. Lillard thus built his own franchise record of most converted three-point throws to 1698. After the game, Lillard commented on his current high performance with the words "I've never been in this type of rhythm in my life." It was during this phase that the nomination for the All-Star Game 2020 fell, but he was not nominated due to a groin strain could follow.

On August 12, 2020, he was able to equalize his personal point record in one of the last games of the season: In the 134: 131 against the Dallas Mavericks, he again scored 61 points.
