The 2017/18 NBA season marked the National Basketball Association's 72nd season . The regular season began on October 18, 2017 with the Cleveland Cavaliers playing at home against the Boston Celtics at Quicken Loans Arena . The 2018 NBA All-Star Game took place on February 18, 2018 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles , the end of the regular season was scheduled for April 11, 2018, before the playoffs finally began on April 14, 2018 . The champions were the Golden State Warriors .
Off-season
End of career
- Paul Pierce ended his career after 19 years in the NBA by signing a symbolic contract with the Boston Celtics on July 17, 2017 , for which he was active for 15 years and with whom he won the 2008 NBA championship.
- James Jones was introduced as part of the management of the Phoenix Suns on July 19, 2017 , marking the end of his career after 14 years and three NBA titles.
- Jason Maxiell signed a symbolic contract with the Detroit Pistons on August 4, 2017, ending his NBA career there after 14 seasons.
NBA draft
The 2017 NBA Draft took place on June 22, 2017 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn , New York .
Player change
- On June 20, 2017, multiple All-Star Dwight Howard moved from the Atlanta Hawks to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Miles Plumlee and Marco Belinelli .
- On the day of the NBA draft, the Brooklyn Nets gave their longtime player and team captain Brook Lopez along with the draft rights to Kyle Kuzma to the Los Angeles Lakers , in exchange for D'Angelo Russell and Timofey Mozgov .
- On August 31, 2017, a so-called "blockbuster trade" took place, in which the courted point guard of the Cleveland Cavaliers , Kyrie Irving , moved to the Boston Celtics . In return, the Cavaliers received the all-star Isaiah Thomas and Jae Crowder and Ante Žižić . In addition, the Celtics gave the first round pick of the Brooklyn Nets in the 2018 NBA draft, which they acquired from them in 2013, as well as the second round pick of the Miami Heat in 2020.
Free Agency
- All-Star forward Gordon Hayward of the Utah Jazz was a free agent and was among the most sought-after free agents of the summer. Hayward's list included the jazz that wanted to be extended with him, the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat . After Hayward paid visits to Miami and Boston, he invited Jazz to his home in San Diego. A day later, Hayward announced that he would sign a contract with the Celtics.
- Four-time all-star forward Paul Millsap is leaving the Atlanta Hawks and moving to the Denver Nuggets .
- On July 7th, the Golden State Warriors announced that they had signed shooting guard Nick Young . He had previously played four seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers .
- Stephen Curry , whose contract had expired after last season, renewed with the Golden State Warriors and became one of the top earners in the NBA.
- After a season in Chicago, Dwyane Wade was released from his contract as part of a buyout and was a free agent . On September 28, the Cleveland Cavaliers announced they had signed Wade for a year.
Regular season
On October 18, 2017, the Cleveland Cavaliers opened the regular season with a home game against the Boston Celtics . The injury to Gordon Hayward , who broke his shin, caused a sensation . Two and a half hours after the Cavaliers, the reigning champions, the Golden State Warriors , started the season with a game against the Houston Rockets .
