Brad Stevens (born October 22, 1976 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) is an American basketball coach . He has been the head coach of the Boston Celtics since 2013 . Stevens had previously worked as an assistant and head coach for the Butler University basketball team for 12 years .

Career

Butler Bulldogs (2001 to 2013)

After the then coach Thad Matta left Butler University after the 2000/01 season, the new head coach Todd Lickliter appointed Stevens as assistant coach. Stevens was integrated into all areas of the game. He was responsible for training, game preparation, coaching during the game, but also for recruiting new players. During his 6 years as an assistant coach, the team achieved a score of 131-61.

In April 2007, Brad Stevens took over the position of head coach as Todd Lickliter moved to the University of Iowa. In the six years in charge of the Butler University team, the team lost in the finals of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship in 2010 and 2011 . Over 6 seasons, the team achieved a balance of 166-49 under his leadership. Under Stevens, Gordon Hayward and Shelvin Mack were formed into professional players who now play in the NBA .

Boston Celtics (since 2013)

Before the 2013-14 NBA season , Brad Stevens was named the new head coach of the Boston Celtics . With a balance of 25-57, however, the playoffs were clearly missed.

In the following season , contrary to all expectations, the Celtics qualified for the "post season" with a score of 40-42 by reaching 7th place in the Eastern Conference. For this performance Stevens was fourth in the election for the NBA Coach of the Year Award 2015. This did not change the fact that the Celtics had to say goodbye to the Cleveland Cavaliers from the playoffs in the first round without a win .

In the 2015/16 season , Stevens continued to improve the Celtics. With the help of 48 victories, they finished 5th in the Eastern Conference. In the playoffs, however, they were eliminated again in the first round, this time against the Atlanta Hawks .

Surprisingly, Stevens coached the Celtics in the 2016/17 season for first place in the Eastern Conference with 53 wins and thus for home advantage during the playoffs. In these they prevailed first against the Chicago Bulls in six, then against the Washington Wizards in seven games. In the Conference Finals, however, was against the Cleveland Cavaliers , which one could only wrest a victory.
