Robert Lee Williams (born October 17, 1997 in Shreveport , Louisiana ) is an American basketball player . He currently plays for the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and their farm team in the G-League , the Maine Red Claws .

He was nicknamed "Timelord" for his clock blocking , that is, his effective man coverage until the shot clock ran out .

career

Originally from the US state of Louisiana, Williams played as a student at North Caddo High School in Vivian . In June 2015, he announced his decision to study and play basketball at Texas A&M University from 2016 . He also had offers from Baylor University , and Louisiana State University had shown interest in him.

In his freshman year at Texas A&M University (2016/17), Williams was named Defender of the Year in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) after blocking 2.5 throws and 11.9 points in 31 missions per game and had achieved 8.2 rebounds per encounter. He decided against it after just one year at university to try the leap into the NBA and wanted to advance his basketball development in his sophomore season at Texas A&M University. In the 2017/18 game year, he was on the grid in 23 of 30 missions and achieved averages of 10.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per match. He was also named SEC's best defender in the 2017/18 season, but had to share this award with Chris Silva from the University of South Carolina .

At the end of March 2018, he announced that he would be leaving the university and participating in the NBA's draft process in June 2018. There the Boston Celtics secured the rights to Williams in the first selection round in a total of 27th place.
