Enes Kanter (born May 20, 1992 in Zurich , Switzerland ) is a basketball player who is currently stateless after his Turkish citizenship was canceled . He plays for the Boston Celtics in the North American NBA .
Youth and college
Enes Kanter settled in Van because of the work and the hometown of his father, a university graduate . He first started playing basketball in Van at the age of 14. In 2006 he was part of the youth department of Fenerbahçe Ülkerspor . Already at the age of 16 he attracted attention when he scored 22 points, 17 rebounds and 4 blocks at the Jordan Brand Classic International . As a reservist of the professional team, Kanter came in the 2008/09 season to nine appearances in the Turkish basketball league and in the ULEB Euroleague . Fenerbahçe and the Greek top club Olympiacos Piraeus then offered Kanter a professional contract. However, Kanter declined on the grounds that he wanted to move to an American high school. He moved to the United States to the Stoneridge Preparatory School .
After graduating from high school, Kanter received offers from many renowned American universities. Including the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), the University of Southern California (USC) and Indiana University . Initially he gave an oral acceptance to the University of Washington , but later enrolled at the University of Kentucky . At the Nike Hoop Summit 2010, Kanter scored 34 points against a US selection, breaking the competition record set by Dirk Nowitzki in 1998 . He also got 13 rebounds. After this performance, he was considered a great NBA talent by many scouts and experts.
At the beginning of the 2010/11 season Kanter moved to the college team of Kentucky, he should not have played there according to NCAA rules, since he had received 33,000 USD from Fenerbahçe Ülkerspor in the 2008/09 season over his necessary expenses. Without having played a game, Kanter switched to the professional camp after a year at university and signed up for the NBA draft .
NBA
Utah Jazz (2011 to 2015)
In the 2011 NBA draft , he was drafted third by the Utah Jazz . The draft pick had been acquired by the New Jersey Nets in an earlier transfer in exchange for Deron Williams .
He made his NBA debut on December 27, 2011 against the Los Angeles Lakers . In the 71:96 defeat of Jazz against the Lakers, Kanter came off the bench and scored five points and eleven rebounds. Due to his lack of experience and immature skills, Kanter mostly came off the bench in his rookie season. On April 26, Kanter scored his first double-double with twelve points and ten rebounds against the Portland Trail Blazers .
During the summer of 2012, Kanter lost about 22 kg of his weight through a strict eating plan. In his second year, Kanter managed a so-called 20/20 game. When Jazz won against the Charlotte Bobcats on March 1, 2013, Kanter achieved career bests with 23 points and 22 rebounds. Kanter finished his second year with improved values in all categories. Shortly before the end of the season, Kanter sustained an injury by dislocating his shoulder. The season ended prematurely for him.
With the departure of Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap , a lot of playing time was free for Kanter. Kanter started as a center, but lost his regular seat shortly afterwards to Marvin Williams . From then on he brought his performance off the bench before head coach Tyrone Corbin let him start more often at the end of the season. Kanter achieved top career results in all categories this season. Under the new coach Quin Snyder , Kanter became a nominal starter in jazz for the new NBA season 14/15 . However, he could not convince defensively and increasingly lost play to Rudy Gobert .
Oklahoma City Thunder (2015 to 2017)
In February 2015, Kanter was transferred to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of a three-team transfer. Just a few days earlier, Kanter was dissatisfied with his role in jazz and called for a team change. On March 24, 2015, he set a club record in the game against the Los Angeles Lakers by scoring a double-double in the first quarter . In this game he got 25 points and 16 rebounds. A week later, in the game against the Dallas Mavericks , Kanter achieved a personal record with 30 points. In addition, he completed a double-double with 16 rebounds. Dallas just won the game 135-131. Kanter scored 18.7 points and 11.1 rebounds on average in the remaining 26 games for the Thunder. However, the Thunder just missed the playoff qualification. In the summer of 2015, Kanter signed a preliminary contract with the Portland Trail Blazers as a so-called restricted free agent . The Thunder then had three days to catch up with the offer, so that Kanter would continue to play for $ 70 million over four years in Oklahoma. With that contract, he became the highest-earning NBA player of Turkish origin of all time. On April 6, 2016, he scored a career high of 33 points and 20 rebounds in the game against the Portland Trail Blazers. He is the first Thunder player in history to have over 30 points and 20 rebounds. In the subsequent election for the best bank player of the season , Kanter took third place.
Kanter suffered a curious injury in the 2016/17 season when, out of frustration, he hit a folding chair with his fist and fractured his forearm, which meant that the Thunder was missing eight weeks.
New York Knicks (2017 to 2019)
Kanter was traded to the New York Knicks on September 23, 2017 along with Doug McDermott and a second round pick from 2018 in exchange for star player Carmelo Anthony . At the beginning of February 2019, Kanter was dismissed from the Knicks' contract, which ran until the end of the season.
Portland Trail Blazers (2019)
A few days after separating from the Knicks , Enes Kanter signed a new contract until the end of the season with the Portland Trail Blazers on February 13 , where he should replace the injured Jusuf Nurkic . Kanter helped the Blazers to a strong playoff performance with which he reached the conference finals in the west.
Boston Celtics (Since 2019)
Kanter signed a ten million dollar two-year contract with the Boston Celtics that summer .
