Fenerbahçe (basketball) (officially Fenerbahçe Beko, due to name sponsorships with household appliance manufacturer beko ) is a Turkish basketball club in Istanbul and represents the men's basketball department of the Fenerbahçe SK sports club .

history

The later club Ülkerspor was founded in 1975 under the name Nasasspor and was a mediocre team in Turkish basketball for 20 years. With the takeover of the club by the food manufacturer Ülker , higher goals were also set.

The club was renamed Ülkerspor and already contested the final of the Turkish championship the following season and also gained the right to participate in the Korac Cup the next season . For the past twelve years, Ülkerspor, together with Efes Pilsen , have determined the Turkish basketball league. During this time they contested eight finals and this three times they won.

After winning the championship in 2006, the club stopped playing and merged with the basketball department of the Fenerbahçe SK sports club .

The merger as such ultimately looks similar to the two other traditional clubs in Istanbul. While the other two clubs were each supported by other brand names (such as Cola Turka at Besiktas and Café Crown at Galatasaray ) of the Ülker group , Fenerbahçe got the name of the group after the basketball operations at Ülkerspor were discontinued. Ülker's CEO , Murat Ülker, was an avowed fan and a member of the Fenerbahçe SK club. The sympathy of the company boss should therefore have made the decision easier when choosing a name. Ülkerspor was previously contractually bound to the ULEB Euroleague, as each year a Euroleague place was automatically guaranteed, so as not to lose this place, the choice of name played a role in the merger.

However, Fenerbahçe Istanbul still kept the club colors, logo, emblem, etc. The change and merger on the part of Ülkerspor and Ülker in this respect only amount to the sponsorship of the basketball department of the sports club. In 2015 the sponsorship contract with Ülker was terminated.

The greatest sporting success was winning the ULEB Euroleague Cup on May 21, 2017. With an 80-64 win against Olympiacos Piraeus , Fenerbahçe SK was crowned Euroleague champion. Finals MVP was chosen as Ekpe Udoh .

Fenerbahçe also played five times in a row in the final fours of the EuroLeague (2015-2019). It is currently a record in Turkish basketball history.
