David Emil Andersen (born June 23, 1980 in Carlton , Melbourne ) is an Australian basketball player. He can play in the positions of power forward and center and has been a long-time member of the Australian national team . In addition, he has Danish citizenship, so that he is an EU national in European leagues . Andersen was one of the few players to win the title three times in the highest European club competition, the ULEB Euroleague . In addition, he and his various teams in Europe won a total of eight national championships in Italy , Russia and Spain, as well as eight titles in national cup competitions. He has been playing for Melbourne United since 2016 and is back in Australia for the first time since 1999.

Club career

Initially active for the Wollongong Hawks in the NBL , Andersen moved to Europe in 1999. He was active for children in Bologna until 2003 and won the Italian championship and the Euroleague with this club in 2001 . For Montepaschi Siena he played for a year, he was again Italian champion, where he was recognized as the most valuable player in the final series, and reached the Final Four of the Euroleague . He celebrated two more victories in this competition ( 2006 - he was unable to take part in the Final Four due to injury - 2008 ) and one final ( 2007 ) with CSKA Moscow , where he was under contract until 2008 and also won the Russian championship every year. In addition, Andersen was elected to the All Euroleague First Team in 2005 . In 2008 he moved to Spain to FC Barcelona.

On July 15, 2009, it was announced that the Houston Rockets had acquired the NBA rights to Andersen after he had been drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 2002 . 2010 followed a change within the NBA to the Toronto Raptors , which Andersen gave up to the New Orleans Hornets in November of the same year . In 2011 he returned to Europe and signed a contract with Montepaschi Siena . On August 16, 2012, Fenerbahçe Ülker announced his commitment for 2 years. After winning the national cup competition in 2013, however, they were eliminated in the championship in the first play-off round. The new coach Željko Obradović then renounced the other services of Andersen and he finally signed a new contract with the French runner-up Illkirch-Graffenstaden Basket from Strasbourg at the end of January 2014 , who had already been eliminated from the ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 . The following season he joined league rivals ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne , where he played until 2016.

National team career

Andersen played in various youth teams in Australia and was named Most Valuable Player at the 1998 Albert Schweitzer Tournament . He participated with the senior national team in the 2004 , 2008 , 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games and was also part of the Australian selection at the 2010 and 2014 World Championships .
