Qualification criteria
There will be 288 athletes taking part in the competitions, twelve teams of each gender with twelve players each. The 2010 world champions and the five winners of the 2011 continental federations are qualified for the Olympic tournament. In the men's category, the finalists of the European and American championships also qualify. The last opportunity to qualify is then a tournament in 2012, in which the five best women's teams and the three best men's teams qualify. Twelve teams will take part in this tournament, the two best African and Asian , the three best American , the four best European and the best oceanic team from the 2011 continental championships that did not qualify.
After FIBA had initially decided in April 2010 that the teams from Great Britain were not automatically qualified as hosts, the decision was revised on March 13, 2011. Thus, Great Britain no longer had to qualify via the 2011 European Championship .
