Nolina bigelovii is a species of the genus Nolina in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). English common names are "Bigelow's Beargrass" and "Bigelows Nolina".

Nolina bigelovii is stem-forming with a stature height of 1 to 3 m. It is rhizomatous . The variable, stiff, light green to blue colored leaves are 100 to 150 cm long and 10 to 50 mm wide. The leaf margins are finely toothed when young, old specimens are fibrous.

The inflorescence is 0.7 to 1.3 m high with irregularly arranged branches. The white to cream colored flowers are 2 to 4 mm long and 1 to 2.5 mm wide. The flowering period extends from April to June.

The round capsule fruits , woody when ripe, are 8 to 12 mm long and in diameter. The brown, egg-shaped to elongated seeds are 2.5 to 3.5 mm long.

Nolina bigelovii is frost hardy to minus 5 ° C.

Distribution and systematics

Nolina bigelovii is distributed in the US states of California , Nevada , Arizona and in Mexico in Sonora and Baja California at altitudes of 290 to 1500 m. It grows on stony ground on flat hills and is associated with Yucca schidigera and various types of cacti.

Nolina bigelovii is a member of the Arborescentes section . It is the most common type of the genus. The smooth leaves with the fibrous leaf margins in the adult stage are characteristic.

The first description as Dasylirion bigelovii was in 1857 by John Torrey . Sereno Watson placed it in the genus Nolina in 1879 . A synonym is Beaucarnea bigelovii (Torr.) Baker .
